We often hear and read about different routes to whiten our teeth, both through natural remedies at home and through proper in-office procedures performed at the dentists. But what is rather ignored is studying the underlying reasons that actually cause teeth discoloration which eventually calls for teeth whitening.
What Causes Teeth Discoloration?
Dentists in Pakistan have covered a number of reasons for not-so-bright smile, which over time result in teeth discoloration.
The first and foremost is different food and beverage choices. Particularly, coffee, tea and red wine are atop the list of staining culprits which seriously damage the color of the enamel. Intense color pigments in such foods and beverages, called chromogens, attach to your tooth enamel and cause staining which then leads to discoloration.
Second and perhaps one of the most common causes of teeth discoloration is the use of tobacco. Studies reveal that two chemicals found in tobacco are essentially the worst enemies of the white color of enamel; tar and nicotine. They both cause stubborn stains on the enamel. While tar is naturally dark, nicotine is colorless until it combines with oxygen, after which it turns yellowish. All the cosmetic surgery experts in Lahore agree that both substances are highly characterized in terms of surface-staining.
Age is another important factor leading to teeth discoloration. Over time and as you age, the dentin (which is a rather softer layer under the enamel) gets thinner. This might also be due to excessive brushing, but age also gives in as a leading factor. This then causes the yellowish dentin to show through the enamel, hence leading to natural teeth discoloration.
Also, trauma is another major cause of teeth discoloration. This is basically because if you are hit in the mouth during any accident, the color of your teeth may change since they react to injury by laying down more dentin. Since dentin is darker in color as compared to the enamel, it shows through the enamel to give a yellowish shade to the teeth.
Finally, medications may also cause teeth darkening as a side effect of certain antihistamines, anti psychotics and hypertension medications. Sometimes, the exposure of young children to antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline also cause teeth discoloration. Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation are also glaring causes of darkened teeth.
What is Solution?
If you are suffering from discolored teeth, the solution is to try out some natural hacks at home or opt for an in-office teeth whitening treatment at your dentist. You can also chose teeth whitening products that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (bleaching agents), that break down stains into smaller pieces which then makes the teeth color less concentrated. Your options then are:
- Whitening toothpastes – these remove surface stains through the action of mild abrasives that scrub the teeth.
- At-home bleaching hacks – try peroxide containing whiteners, whitening gels, whitening strips, or simple hacks such as swishing coconut oil through you r teeth.
- In-office bleaching – medically termed as chair-side bleaching, you need to see best dentists in Pakistan for this procedure.
