 Importance of Regular Dental Checkup

A dental checkup allows the dentist to see if you have any dental problem and that your teeth and gums are healthy. Leaving problems untreated could make treatment much more difficult. So a regular checkup every 6 months or so by your dentist is very important.

What Happens During Your Dental Visit?

At each dental visit, a dentist examines your teeth and gums. He asks you about your medical and dental history and about your oral hygiene.

Regular Dental Checkup

There are two parts of a dental checkup: examination and cleaning.

During examination, the dentist will examine your teeth and gums, take X-rays to detect cavities. He will check for plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria, which if not removed, can harden and form tartar. By brushing and flossing tartar cannot be removed. Tartar buildup can also lead to a gum infection.

Next, your gums are examined. A special instrument is used to check the depth of your gums. People with gum diseases have deeper spaces and bleeding.

It would also include a careful and thorough examination of your head, neck and tongue. This is basically to look for any signs of swelling, redness, tenderness, or possible signs of cancer.

Your teeth will be cleaned at your visit. This procedure is called Scaling. Scaling is done to remove plaque and tartar.

Teeth Scaling Before After Dental Aesthetics

After scaling, your teeth will be polished and a paste is used for this. It help to remove any stains present on your tooth surface. The final step is flossing. Flossing would help in removal of any plaque or food particle clinging onto your tooth.

What you should do between each dental visit?

When you visit the dentist, there are key services that they can provide to make sure you get the care you need. At home, you will have to keep up the work the dentist begins in order to keep your mouth healthy. The key things that you should do between your visits to the dentist office include:

  1. Brushing your teeth.  You want to brush your teeth twice a day and preferably three times a day after every meal to prevent the accumulation of bacteria. You should use the correct brushing technique.
  2. Flossing your teeth. Flossing should be done once a day in order to take care of gum health. Brushing does not remove all plaque that gets stuck between the teeth. You can get inflamed and irritated gums and eventually are at risk of developing gum disease if you do not floss regularly to keep your gums healthy.
  3. Using Mouthwash is the last step in the process of killing bacteria and keeping  your mouth fresh and  healthy. It can also help you to have great smell.

Hence, Regular dental exams are a critical part of preventive health care and should be done every 6 months or as advised by the dental professional.
