Orthodontics is when the teeth are straightened or moved in order to improve the appearance of your smile by correcting the alignment of your crooked teeth and the way you bite together. An incorrect bite can lead to long-term dental problems and even jaw and head pain. By straightening the teeth, you also help your teeth to prevent catching decay and gum diseases with straighter teeth are easier to clean.

Types of Orthodontic Treatments:

Growth Modification

This is done in growing children whose developing jaws face a delay to catch up natural symmetry and harmony. Special appliances also known as functional appliances are given to the growing stage according to the problem. This uses the advantage of the natural growth of bones and muscles to condition the jaws to develop in the right balance.

Conventional Braces

Orthodontic braces are either fixed or removable braces.

Fixed braces consist of brackets and bands which are cemented (glued) to your teeth which hold flexible wires in place. In turn, these wires exert pressure on your teeth gently moving them into their correct position over the course of your treatment. It has delicate wires and springs attached which move the teeth using gentle pressure.

There are a few steps to start the treatment. At first, after the case have been planned by experts, Separators will be placed in between your molar teeth. The bands will stay in place for one week to create a space between the teeth for the permanent molar bands. Later, the molar bands, brackets and wires will be put in place. For the first couple of days, your teeth may feel tender to bite and your jaw aches; this is because of the pressure of the brace, taking a headache tablet will help. If the discomfort lasts longer than a few days, book an appointment with Dental Aesthetics for adjustments.

You may find that your brace may also rub against the inside of your lips or cheeks. If this is the case, use the wax we supplied. You will now need to see our dentists at Dental Aesthetics every six to eight weeks to have the bands and wires changed, tightened or indeed elastics added. If you have had your brace tightened, you may feel a little discomfort later in the day. You still require regular six-month check-ups with us to ensure your gums and teeth are healthy.

Chewy sweets are not good for oral health. Also think twice before opening bottles with your teeth, biting pen tops or chewing your fingernails as these can also damage your braces. It is very important that your oral hygiene is excellent as cleaning your teeth are much more difficult with a bracket in place. Brushing your teeth after every snack and meal throughout the day will reduce the risk of decay and gum disease.

In addition, we will update you on the best type of toothbrushes for cleaning braces. If you do not take care of your teeth during your treatment, they can become permanently stained. After your treatment is complete, your braces will be removed. But your treatment is not over as the teeth need to be held in position while the surrounding gum and bone settle.

This period is called retention and the appliance that holds the teeth are called retainers, which are either fixed or removable. Depending on the type of retainers, impressions may be taken in order for the retainers to be made at the dental laboratory.

Removable Braces

These, as the name signifies, can be removed and placed inside the mouth by the patient himself. These are used for less complex cases or in conjunction with fixed braces as part of a combined treatment. It usually takes between 12-15 months but will vary according to how complex the case is. Dental Aesthetics will provide you with a time frame at the beginning of the treatment. However, breakages of the brace will add time to the treatment.

Clear Aligners

Patients, who are conscious about their appearance, go for the clear aligners. Invisible aligner takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you.

These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements our dentist in Lahore plans out for you. There are no metal brackets or wires. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete at Dental Aesthetics. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know about the treatment. Aligners are removable for easy cleaning. And you can eat whatever you want!

Health Benefits of Straight Teeth

Swollen, red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. Unfortunately, these are also signs of periodontal disease. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. That’s where Invisalign comes in. Clear aligners gradually begin to move your teeth into the proper position.

One of the biggest challenges of having braces is removing all the food that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. This can often lead to plaque buildup and eventually tooth decay. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth the way you normally do.

Think of your teeth as a window to the health of your body. Your teeth and gums – and how they look to others when you smile – say a lot about your overall health. If you’re taking good care of both, you’re probably taking good care of yourself. Tooth decay and gum diseases are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss. Studies by the American Dental Association have shown that oral infections can also lead to other more serious ailments including heart diseases and diabetes. Invisalign aligners make daily oral hygiene easier, thus reducing the risk of possible problems.

And correctly aligned teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Invisalign effectively addresses all of these orthodontic issues, so you’ll have the confidence of a great smile.
